Landlord Tenant Board

Matters heard

The Landlord & Tenant Board – LTB hears all disputes between Landlords and Tenants.

The LTB hears matters under the Residential Tenancy Act.

While the majority of the cases heard are matters of evictions, frequently there are disputes heard regarding lack of, or poor maintenance and reduce services provided to Tenants by Landlords.

Recent changes to the Residential Tenancy Act  allows for a Landlord or a Tenant to pursue monies owed even if they longer reside in the rental property.

Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing enforcement

Complaints Regarding Landlords & Vital Services

If a landlord has turned off a vital service (heat, water, electricity) the tenant can make a complaint to the enforcement branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

This can be done by Telephone at (416) 585-7214 or Tell Free at (888) 772-9277

Landlords should be very careful when considering withholding vital services as fines from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing can be as high as

$50,000 for individuals and $250,000 for a business.

More information on complaints check out their website here.

For other matters tenants can bring a Tenant application to the LTB.
